The Ballona Wetlands and Creek is one of the last remaining coastal wetlands in Southern California and is home to many bird species and indigenous plant life. Silicon Beach is the name given to a land parcel in the Playa Vista development that is fast becoming one of the largest hubs for established tech companies and startups.
Located on what used to be the Hughes airfield, it is a mixture of unique new architecture and older structures including the giant airline hangar that once housed the Spruce Goose, the giant wooden aircraft designed and flown by Howard Hughes. The hanger will be the future home for Google, but many other tech companies have already located there, including Yahoo!, YouTube, BuzzFeed, AOL, EdgeCast Networks, and MySpace. The wetlands and Silicon Beach may be awkward neighbors, but make for interesting visual juxtapositions and landscapes along with graphic industrial and architectural imagery.
