The Los Angeles River

Photographs by Peter Bennett

Well, the softcover is sold out, but I have a few copies of the hardcover edition.

I recently considered doing a second printing, but the cost of paper has raised costs higher and the turnaround time has almost tripled for delivery, so I have decided to hold off for now.

If things change and I do a second printing, and you would be interested in pre-ordering a copy, sign up here and I will let you know as soon as I make a decision.

If you might be interested in bulk ordering if I do a second printing, please contact me for a bulk discount price.

The book is 146 pages long and the color photos follow the river geographically from its beginnings in Canoga Park to its mouth in Long Beach. The book features a wonderful Forward by actor/filmmaker Raphael Sbarge, and a moving tribute by Ocean MacAdams to his late father Lewis MacAdams, the founder of FoLAR (Friends of the LA River).

Photography is one of the most important acts of river advocacy and stewardship, bringing rivers into people’s minds, hearts, and conversations through image making. In Los Angeles, there are few river photographers as prolific and insightful as Peter Bennett. His book is an important keepsake of our much-loved LA River, and a gentle call to action to those who might be its next generation of advocates and defenders
— Tilly Hinton, Ph.D., public historian and founder, LA River X
In his new book, Peter Bennett casts a probing lens on something that many Angelenos didn’t know about their city: a river runs through it. His Los Angeles River book traces the waterway from its Valley origins to its final destination at Long Beach. Along the way, Peter captures astounding moments in otherwise mundane surroundings: an egret finds solitude by the river; the shadows of an overpass create a geometric painting in concrete; the Sixth Street Bridge glows in the darkness of its final days. To find beauty in the commonplace is a formidable challenge for any photographer; for Peter Bennett, it’s something he accomplishes with striking regularity.
— Rob Atkins, photographer and author of Earth River Sky: A Journey in Photographs
